HANCOCK COUNTY — Mt. Comfort Road is expected to close in both directions between county roads 300N and 400N starting today (Tuesday, July 6) until late this fall, according to a contractor for the Indiana Department of Transportation.

The closure is for the installation of an underground stormwater detention system and other improvements. Signs will direct a detour using county roads 400N, 700W and 300N. The closure is anticipated to last until Nov. 24.

Local access only to residences and businesses will be maintained during the restrictions, according to a letter from Calumet Civil Contractors, Inc. The main cross street in the area without alternate access, Stoner Drive, will be accessible from the northern side of the construction zone. In the initial phase, Stoner Drive itself — which is home to upwards of a dozen businesses — will be left unaffected. It is anticipated that structural subgrade improvements, storm work and asphalt resurfacing will commence there in August. An additional update will be sent in advance of this work with specific dates.

Following these restrictions, traffic will be opened up to both northbound and southbound traffic on the newly constructed lanes while additional work on the project is completed in 2022.
