Alleged Shoplifter Charged with Possession of Controlled Substance at Jewel-Osco on Vail Ave, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police officers arrested Winfred U. Barnett, age 55, at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2021 at the Jewel-Osco store, 122 North Vail Avenue in Arlington Heights.

Winfred Barnett was charged with Retail Theft (taking merchandise from retail establishment with intent to deprive merchant without paying) and Possession of an Amount of a Controlled Substance [720 570/402(c) – POSS AMT CON SUB EXCEPT(A)/(D).




The most common charges for illegal narcotics that fall under this section 720 ILCS 570/402(c) are cocaine possession and heroin possession, with less common charges involving possession of ecstasy, morphine, LSD and other drugs. All cases of drug possession under this law are felony offenses, according to Chicago Drug Possession Attorney Andrew M. Weisberg.

The suspect’s booking date was Sunday, June 20, 2021 in Cook County Jail DIV5-1G-9-1 where he remains held *NO BOND*. Winfred Barnett’s next court date is July 7, 2021 at Cook County Circuit Court Rolling Meadows.

Police and paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 3:50 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2021 to a report that a shoplifter was injured in a struggle with store security at the Jewel-Osco, 122 North Vail Avenue in Arlington Heights.




The alleged shoplifter arrived on a bicycle and left in an ambulance after he resisted security personnel while he was stopped — accused of shoplifting. The injuries were initially believed to be minor. The suspect was placed in custody, and was transported to Northwest Community Hospital, and he was booked at Cook County Jail on Sunday.

Passers by wondered if the downtown Jewel-Osco had been robbed as police gathered evidence connected to the retail theft at the grocery store.
