The Best Things to Do This Week, According to Our Editors: June 21

A non-alcoholic Lakefront beer, a tasty salmon recipe and more in this week’s top editor picks.

1. Try Lakefront’s new Riverwest Stein NA

CHRIS DROSNER, EXECUTIVE EDITOR

Earlier this month Lakefront Brewery rolled out an alcohol-removed version of its Riverwest Stein amber lager, which has been the brewery’s bestseller since its introduction 34 years ago. Yeah, a beer that might be older than you. Anyway, Riverwest Stein NA is made with exactly the recipe and in the same way as the regular version, brewed up to its usual 5.6% ABV before the alcohol is removed. (Lakefront is making its near beer at the high-tech Octopi Brewing in Waunakee, near Madison.) RWSNA – this first batch, at least – is a little lighter in both color and body than its boozy forebear, and has a little more hop zip on the finish, but it’s a fine reproduction of the real deal and unquestionably beery. It’s a great option for a beer fan looking to cut back or eliminate alcohol.

2. Eat at Sammy’s Taste of Chicago

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

The other week, I found myself in West Allis taking care of some business matters. After I’d tossed the shovels back in my trunk and hosed down the car, I was famished. I decided to try out Sammy’s Taste of Chicago, a small no-frills hot dog joint at 1234 S. 108th St. I ordered up a Chicago Dog. It comes authentic with the full array of toppings, the pickle and the poppy seed bun, and it’s delicious and cheap. On Sundays, they sell them for just $2, along with their chili dogs and corn dogs. So if you’re ever in the mood for a Chicago Dog, or you happen to be in Stallis attending to matters, than you know the place to go.

3. Watch the Bucks Game

ALLISON GARCIA, DIGITAL EDITOR

The Bucks just beat Kevin Durant – I mean the Brooklyn Nets – in the Eastern Conference. I’m not a textbook sports fan, but Saturday’s Bucks win was one of the most exciting basketball games I’ve every watched, and now the team is heading to the Eastern Conference Finals! Wednesday’s game is a must-watch, whether you buy tickets at Fiserv Forum, crowd the Deer District, patron your favorite sports bar or just turn it on at home.

4. Try This Salmon Recipe

ANN CHRISTENSON, SENIOR DINING EDITOR

I cook salmon often. And I recently picked up a tip – for seasoning salmon, but it has other applications as well – from one of my favorite sources, food52.com: grated, dried shiitake mushrooms. Food52 calls it a magic wand. Agreed. The meaty umami is addictive!

5. Treat Yourself to a Pedicure

LINDSEY ANDERSON, SENIOR CULTURE EDITOR

I normally keep my toes stuffed inside closed-toe shoes (and sometimes two pairs of socks, when it’s really frickin’ cold). But I just treated myself to a pedicure at Neroli Salon and Spa, and plan to go shopping in the Third Ward later this week, for a few pairs of summer-y sandals. Let’s hope the weather stays nice!
