BHOPAL: BJP Rajya Sabha member Jyotiraditya Scindia on Monday attacked Congress for its demand to change the name of Gwalior to 'Virangna Laxmibai' to pay respect to Jhansi Ki Rani. Scindia said Congress was spreading misconceptions for political gains.
The BJP leader is on a four-day visit to Madhya Pradesh where he will participate in the first state working committee meeting in the capital on June 24.

"Whether it's Gwalior or the country, they (Congress) have to play only politics. Some say vaccination wouldn't work. Some said it has meat. Some even suggested not getting a vaccine. Now they themselves are running for the vaccine. As far as changing the name goes, if it has so much interest then Congress will have to change its name to re-emerge in the mind and heart of the people," Scindia replied to questions on name change in Gwalior.
He further said, " That is why our Prime Minister says, the face of Congress is of `namdars' (dynast) and the face of BJP is of `kamdars' (working class)."
The former Union minister also inaugurated mega vaccination camps at Hazira Civil hospital and visited vaccination centres at district hospital Murar and Laxmiganj. He also encouraged people to get vaccinated to protect from Coronavirus infection and administered an oath to get vaccinated.
"Efforts are being made to increase health services in the region. We are in touch with big hospitals to increase health facilities in Gwalior. The
Jiwaji University also wants to set up a medical college. This will improve health services to a great extent. I have written a letter to the chief minister seeking help," he said.
Scindia is likely to visit Shivpuri, Kolaras, Lukwasa and Guna on Tuesday. On June 23, the BJP leader is likely to visit Ashoknagar, Mungaoli, Sironj and Shamshabad before reaching Bhopal in the night. On June 24, Scindia is likely to participate in the state working committee meeting and discuss with senior leaders issues related to appointments in boards and corporations apart from development projects which were pending due to Covid-19, said sources.
On Scindia's remarks Congress said that there is no need to change its name because the day Scindia left Congress, the party had become clean.
"Virangna Laxmibai was a freedom fighter and Scindia cannot honour her due to reasons known to all. As far as changing name is concerned, the Congress is a history and it became clean the day Scindia left the party to join BJP," said Congress state spokesperson, KK Mishra.
