A Southern-Style Restaurant Is Coming to Downtown Milwaukee

This Carolina-based restaurant will bring southern cooking to Milwaukee.

Asheville, North Carolina-based restaurant chain Tupelo Honey Cafe will open a location this summer in the  new, 10-story Huron Building, at 511 N. Broadway, just north of the Third Ward (across from the parking lot for Milwaukee Public Market). The restaurant is known for from-scratch recipes, responsibly sourced ingredients and traditions “rooted in the Carolina Mountains,” according to press materials. The opening date is scheduled for Tuesday, July 27.

The menu starts with snacks, such as fried green tomatoes, spicy cauliflower bites, avocado toast points, house-made fried pickles and fried cauliflower tacos. There are also greens and bowls like the Mountain Harvest Bowl and Southern Cobb. Bone-in fried chicken brined for 18 hours is another menu item, with two kinds offered (honey dusted and sweet & spicy).

Beyond that, they do chicken and waffles, chef specialties (smothered chicken, blackened mahi mahi, shrimp and grits), sandwiches (Southern chicken BLT), a burger, two kind of tacos, as well as brunch all day options that include fried chicken and “Cathead” biscuit (as big as a cat’s head, so the saying goes), waffles and pancakes, avocado toast and eggs, various eggs benedict, and sides such as baked mac and cheese, and heirloom grits with goat cheese. Desserts include banana pudding and brown butter pecan pie.

The Third Ward spot is the first Wisconsin location for the chain, which has restaurants in Michigan, Iowa, Colorado, Idaho and across the South.
