The host, who is temporarily filling in following Piers Morgan’s explosive GMB exit, started off by praising Cat for her hard work on Lorraine this past week.

Richard said that he could relate to Cat due to the fact they are both taking temporary spots of the much-loved shows, but with ‘none of the responsibility’.

“You and me are doing the same thing here, we're both guest presenters,” he joked.

“It's all the fun with none of the responsibility."

A cheerful Cat then poked fun at her own presenting skills, admitting she’s shocked ITV bosses allowed her to fill Lorraine’s spot all week.

The stunning star quipped: “Exactly! I can't believe they've let me do it all week.

“I thought I'd get the heath home on Monday."

Cat’s comment immediately sent Richard into a fit of laughter, and he then savagely swiped: “So did I! I watched the show, and it was awful!"

Thankfully, Cat took his joke on the chin, but some viewers found his manner rather offensive.

Taking to Twitter to discuss Richard and Cat’s ‘awkward’ conversation, one user wrote: “Oh good god, Richard Madeley telling Cat Deeley she’s an awful presenter on Good Morning Britain.”

“Awkward of Richard Madeley to pick at Cat like that. She’s doing amazing on Lorraine,” another echoed.

Meanwhile, a third fumed: “Where does he get off saying she’s a bad presenter? She’s better than you hun.”

Elsewhere, other fans found it highly amusing.

“Would people chill out. He was obviously joking. You literally can’t say anything these days,” someone else pointed out.

And another agreed: “It was a joke.”

Earlier this week, Richard confirmed he would be returning to Good Morning Britain as host.

"Good to be back (well, for me... as to you, I can only apologise...) See you there, folks!" he added.
