Palatine police, firefighters and paramedics responded about 6:50 p.m. Monday, May 24, 2021 to a report of a dog attack in the block of 200 West Washington Street in Palatine. The preliminary investigation indicates a woman was walking a Pit Bull mix and and Akita mix dog on leash in this area at that time. During this walk the two dogs made contact with another small white dog being walked on a leash by a woman in the same area. At one point during the walk the Pit Bull and Akita both slipped the control of their handler, charged and attacked the smaller white dog. The female owner of the white dog attempted to shield her dog from the attack, and was bitten as well.

After the first victim was able to get to safety with her dog, the Pit Bull and Akita dogs made visual contact with another small white dog being walked on leash by a male owner. The Pit Bull and Akita then charged and attacked the second smaller white dog and bit the male owner as he tried to defend his dog. The Pit Bull and Akita were eventually brought back under control and turned over to the female who was walking them.

Palatine Fire Department responded, treated and transported both the male and female bite victims to Northwest Community Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The first white dog that was bitten was treated and transported to Golf Rose Animal Hospital by Palatine Police where it subsequently died. The second bitten dog was also transported for bite wounds and at the time of this report is alive.

Both the Pit Bull and the Akita were current on their rabies vaccination. This is an active case and is being turned over to the Palatine Police Animal Warden for further
investigation.
