Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday unveiled a revised 2021-22 budget proposal that directs hundreds of millions in new funding to California’s courts, much of it to deal with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new spending plan includes $158 million more for deferred courthouse maintenance projects as well as $30 million to support a program introduced by the chief justice in December to fast-track the resolution of backlogged criminal cases. Newsom’s proposal also sets aside an additional $60 million to help process those low-level misdemeanor and felony cases if court leaders can prove to the Department of Finance that it’s needed.
