Erica Gibson’s family insists there is a video that Hazel Crest police investigators must see before they close the case of the shooting death of 12 year-old Erica Gibson that occurred while she visited a friend’s house. Hazel Crest police officers responded about 10:05 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2021 to a report of a gunshot victim in the block of 17600 Arlington Lane in Hazel Crest.

Erica Gibson’s death was ruled a homicide by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. Erica died from a gunshot wound to the neck.

The social media video captured prior to the date of the shooting death Saturday night, May 8, 2021 allegedly shows the 14 year-old shooting suspect with the same gun that was used to kill Erica Gibson. The family says the TikTok video shows the teen suspect holding the gun, dancing with the gun, and flipping the middle finger while dancing with the long gun (rifle). The evidence indicates a history that an unsecured gun may have been accessible by an unsupervised teen.

Erica Gibson’s family wants the Cook County State’s Attorney to see the video to fully understand that a gun or guns were accessible on at least one other occasion prior to the fatal shooting. CBS 2 Chicago reports that the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office told CBS 2 Chicago that the case is not closed.

The victim’s family says the adults in the house, who are related to the shooter, are not saying anything to police.

In Hazel Crest, people just don’t know important details.
