In a case that allegedly involves a pharmacy technician providing medical imaging services outside his qualifications, Omayr K. Niazi, age 41, of Deerfield, has been charged with aggravated battery, forgery and wire fraud. The Hoffman Estates Police Department and the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) investigated a complaint that Niazi injected a female patient with a contrasting solution that was followed by a burning sensation in her arm.

The female patient reported to Hoffman Estates police that on November 23, 2020 she went to Hope Imaging and Medical Center at 2500 West Higgins Road in Hoffman Estates for a CT scan. After Niazi injected the female patient with the solution, the patient felt a burning sensation in her arm and called police, according to Cook County Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Kristina Modesto. Contrasting solutions are injected to emphasize detail of specific anatomical structures or physical abnormalities in CT Scan imaging. Contrast solutions can be injected through a vein in the arm to help certain organs or blood vessels become more prominent on the images. In general, patients are known to experience a feeling of warmth during the injection along with a possible metallic taste.

Investigators learned that Niazi holds a pharmacy technician license, but was allegedly not trained nor certified to perform CT scans. CT scans are normally performed by radiology technologists. Usually a physician radiologist “protocols” or prescribes a set of procedural steps that provide specific examination parameters for a CT scan. A specially trained technologist operates the CT scanner according to the prescribed protocol. Initially there was no information regarding whether a physician was supervising Niazi’s work.

Police say they also learned that without authorization, Niazi submitted false credentials and submitted reimbursement claims to insurance companies.

As a condition of his bond set by Cook County Judge Ellen Mandeltort, Niazi may not work in the medical industry. Also, Niazi was ordered held on $100,000 bail Tuesday, May 4, 2021.

The Hope Imaging and Medical Center Yelp profile indicates the business is closed. The business had three 5-star reviews during 2018 to 2019 with two replies from “Omayr N. Business Owner.“ The official website for the business is no longer available, and a medical imaging services business with a different name is located in the Northwest Corporate Centre — a single-story office complex with 261,600 square feet of office space for multiple business tenants.

According to a D&B Hoover profile for Hope Imaging and Medical Center, the Key Principal is Omayr Niazi, and the business started in 2016.

Niazi’s next scheduled court date is May 21, 2021.

All suspects and subjects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
