EU Ready to Discuss U.S. Plan to Waive Vaccine Patent Protection

The European Union is ready to discuss a U.S. proposal to waive intellectual property protection for Covid-19 vaccines, according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

“The EU is ready to discuss any proposal that addresses the crisis in an effective and pragmatic manner,” von der Leyen told a virtual conference in Florence, Italy. “And that’s why we are ready to discuss how the U.S. proposal for a waiver on IP protection for covid vaccines could help achieve that objective.”

Von der Leyen added that in the short run however, all vaccine producing countries should allow export and “avoid measures that disrupt supply chains.”
