The Best Things to Do This Week, According to Our Editors: May 3

The Milwaukee Film Festival starts this week, it’s your last chance to check out Tulip Fest, and more this week in Milwaukee.

1. Kick Off the Milwaukee Film Festival

LINDSEY ANDERSON, SENIOR CULTURE EDITOR

The Film Festival has always been one of my favorite local events. And the lineup this year, the first iteration of the festival that will take place in the spring instead of the fall, looks especially great. Also, I’m finally fully vaccinated, so I might see if a couple of friends want to come over to watch a movie with me. Exciting!

5. Make a Drive to the Tulip Festival

ALLISON GARCIA, DIGITAL EDITOR

Last week, we published an article about a tulip festival over in Spring Grove, Illinois. While you do have to cross state borders (barely), the drive for me was a short and scenic 50 minutes. The tulip festival was absolutely delightful. The colors were bright and they even had vendors and food trucks to visit while you were there. We took some pictures and strolled through the fields. I would definitely recommend checking it out before the festival ends. Mother’s Day will be your last chance.

4. Try This Recipe for Blueberry Muffins

ANN CHRISTENSON, SENIOR DINING EDITOR

My freezer was somehow overrun with… blueberries. I wouldn’t call them ancient but it was time to use some of them. I’ve tried a lot of blueberry muffin recipes and they were just fine. Nothing special. This is the first time I’ve tried Bon Appetit’s Best Blueberry Muffins. Maybe not “best” but really good!

3. Go to a Bar

CHRIS DROSNER, EXECUTIVE EDITOR

My Full Vax Day, which I have looked forward to more than any birthday since my single digits, arrived Tuesday. And on Friday, I did something I have long enjoyed doing but have not done in any meaningful fashion in more than 14 months: I went to the bar. I met friends I had not seen in a long time, I ran into friends I had not seen in even longer, I met new people, I laughed loudly, at a volume that makes sense inside those walls but doesn’t really outside of them, I heard stupid stories and told even stupider ones, I had High Life on draft. Where I went doesn’t really matter because these are experiences that are universal to every bar, including the one near you. BUT: I also had a few pours at Stock House Brewing (7208 W. North Ave., Wauwatosa) and was pleased to discover a promising turnaround in the beer there. New ownership and management have things looking up, and if you haven’t been in several months, it’s worth checking out.

5. Watch Margaret

ARCHER PARQUETTE, MANAGING EDITOR

Kenneth Lonergan has only directed three films in his career, and still he’s better than 95% of directors out there. His first movie, You Can Count on Me is masterful. His most recent movie Manchester by the Sea is quite possibly my favorite movie ever and netted Casey Affleck a much-deserved best actor Oscar. In between those two is the fiasco that is Margaret. The movie was filmed in 2005 but never reached theaters until 2011, as Lonergan and the studio sparred over the runtime. The conflict got so bad that they even sued Lonergan to get the movie released. The cut that went to theaters was a chopped down version, but recently HBOMax released the full 3-hour cut. It’s not as good as Manchester by the Sea, because almost no movie is, but it’s got the Lonergan humor, unmatched nuance and insight into human interaction, and understated, emotional direction. Give it a watch.
