At the Manchester Arena in Manchester, lightweight prospect Campbell Hatton (2-0, 0 KOs), who is the son of Manchester legend Ricky Hatton, looked a lot better in his second outing with a four round decision over Levi Dunn (0-5).

The sole score was 40-36.

Hatton came charging right out of the gate, pressing forward and firing big hooks. Dunn was looking to fire back with punches of his own. Hatton began to target him with big punches to the body and then following up with shots to the head.

Hatton continued to take the fight to Dunn in the second, with hard shots landing flush. Dunn was able to take the punches and fired back with little punches here and there. In the third, Dunn looked ragged and doing a lot of holding as Hatton continued to chip away with punches.

In the fourth, Hatton was pressing for the finish. He was throwing a lot of punches and not as winded as he was in his pro debut. Dunn used every tactic possible to hold and get away from trouble.

James Tennyson’s hopes of breaking into the elite group of lightweights went crashing down in just 130 seconds as Mexico’s Jovanni Straffon battered him to defeat in their IBO title fight.

The Northern Irishman had stopped six straight opponents since stepping up from super-featherweight, where he was stopped by Tevin Farmer for the IBF title in 2018 and he had hoped that an impressive win for the IBO title would put him in the mix for a shot at one of the other titles.

He wasted no time in going flat-out for another quick finish against the Mexican but came unstuck. He landed a good right in the opening seconds, but after Straffon landed with a left of his own, Tennyson just decided to go toe-to-toe with the Mexican.

As the pair threw bombs at each other, not even a minute had passed when a left hook staggered Tennyson. Rather than take any evasive action, Tennyson tried firing right back. He landed a decent left hook, but Saffron landed another southpaw left over the top. Tennyson then got though with two rights and a left uppercut, but Saffron kept punching back and a right-left combination sent Tennyson tottering backwards and he fell to the floor, thumping his head on the canvas as he landed.

Tennyson fell over twice as he tried to regain his feet, but referee Michael Alexander waved him back in. Straffon didn’t need another invitation as he battered Tennyson up against the ropes to force Mr Alexander’s intervention.

“I’ve been through a lot in life and he is not tougher than my life,” Straffon said. “This not only changes my life but daughter’s and my wife’s. I was more than confident of doing what I just did.”

Scott Fitzgerald, the former British super welterweight champion, weighed over the super middleweight limit for his return to the ring after a string of problems outside the ropes as he stopped Gregory Trenel, of France, in the third round.

Heavyweight Johnny Fisher moved to 2-0 as a pro as he stopped journeyman Phil Williams in the third round. Williams was in survival mode from the outset, but Fisher picked shots well to head and body before a prolonged onslaught in the third forced referee Foster’s intervention at 1:46 of the round.
