Extra Alarm Apartment Fire: Flames from Balcony Enter Apartment Above on Bar Harbour Rd, Schaumburg

Police, firefighters, and paramedics from Schaumburg responded about 9:00 p.m. Friday, April 23, 2021 to a report of an apartment balcony fire on the third floor of an apartment at 101 Bar Harbour Road in Schaumburg.

The first Schaumburg fire unit on arrival reported fire showing from the third floor, and requested an upgraded to a working fire response by 9:04 p.m. Engine 52’s crew supplied water to the building’s standpipe to get water to upper floors.




Several companies were assigned rescue inside the 6-story apartment building.

Engine 51 was assigned to the fourth floor above the balcony fire. The hallway on the 4th floor quickly filled with smoke.

A propane cylinder exploded on the balcony about 9:10 p.m.

Several people called 9-1-1 about 9:15 p.m. reporting they were unable to evacuate into the hallway due to smoke in the hallway. A box alarm was activated immediately following the information about obstructed evacuation.




A MABAS Division 1 Box Alarm #1 was activated by 9:17 p.m. Firefighters, paramedics, and command officers from Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Elk Grove Village, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Itasca, Palatine, Roselle, and Streamwood. An additional two ladder trucks were assigned about 9:53 p.m.

An interior crew had water on the fire at the fourth floor apartment unit by 9:17 p.m.

A MABAS Division 1 EMS Box Alarm #5 was activated to the Second Level at 9:21 p.m. Paramedics from Elk Grove Township, Elk Grove Village, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Palatine, Palatine Rural, Roselle, and Streamwood.




The fire inside the apartment unit was reported “knocked” by 9:24 p.m.

Early reports indicated people assessed by paramedics were affected by smoke. Eight ambulances from the EMS Box Alarm Level 2 were assigned to stage near the fire scene to assess fire victims, but no victims were transported to a hospital as of 11:50 p.m..

Both Box Alarms were struck out about 10:46 p.m.

After air samples were measured inside the building, residents that live on floors one, two and three were allowed back in the building about 11:05 p.m.
