Police and firefighters arrived on the scene and discovered a man outside the house, who said his wife was still trapped inside the burning house.

Firefighters began an interior attack, but were forced to evacuate because of rapidly deteriorating fire conditions. Fire burned through the roof, and the woman was later found dead inside the house.

A MABAS Division 27 Box Alarm #5101 was activated at 9:01 PM. A Mayday and 2nd Alarm response was requested at 9:11 PM. An EMS Box Alarm at 9:14 PM.

The Mayday response was activated after a firefighter was injured in a small explosion, and was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal was called to the scene — a standard procedure in a fire involving a fatality.
