THE GREAT RIVER ROAD, which is widely considered one of the country’s most scenic drives, winds its way along the Mississippi River, from Minnesota to Louisiana. Call us biased, but we’re pretty partial to the Wisconsin portion of the road, which snakes past many towns and tourist attractions.
Worthwhile stops include Fort Crawford (a historic frontier outpost in Prairie du Chien), the historic Potosi Brewing (1) and attached ABA National Brewery Museum (3), and the Dickeyville Grotto (2), an outdoor shrine and sculpture park just northeast of Dubuque.
But the greatest draw, of course, is the spectacular view of the river and the surrounding bluffs.
