As temperatures flirt with the 70-degree mark, goslings begin to hatch and Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure kicks off another street-sweeping season, the signs are clear: Spring is here.
The street sweeping will begin Thursday, department spokeswoman Nancy Kuhn said, meaning each month on a designated day, residents parking on the street must move their vehicles so sweepers can clean all the way to the curb. Don’t do it and risk a $50 ticket.
Street sweeping is important to keep Denver clean, Kuhn said, because not only does it clear the streets of dirt and debris but it also also prevents that waste from draining into the city’s stormwater system. The service is particularly needed this year because city officials lifted parking restrictions for several months during the pandemic, cutting into the sweeping season, Kuhn added.
“We measure how many cubic yards of dirt and debris that we pick up every year,” Kuhn said. “And we picked up significantly less (last year) than in 2019, 2018.”
To know when to move a vehicle, Kuhn said to look at the white and red signs lining each street that’s subject to the sweeping. You can also search your address online at denvergov.org.
The street-sweeping season lasts from April through November.
