NEW DELHI: Maharashtra recorded its highest-ever single-day spike of 40,414 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, which pushed its overall tally to 2,71,3875, while 108 deaths pushed the toll to 54,181.
As 17,874 patients were discharged during the day, the recovery count of the state rose to 23,32,453 state health department said. There are 3,25,901 active cases in the state at present.
Meanwhile, Mumbai reported 6,923 new cases, its highest daily rise till now.

Earlier today, Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray asked senior health officials to prepare for restrictions "similar to lockdown" if people continue to flout Covid norms in the state.
Thackeray asked officials to prepare a plan for implementation of a lockdown which will have a minimum impact on the economy on the recommendation of the state Covid-19 task force, an official release said.
With Covid-19 cases surging in the state, the Maharashtra government has ordered night "curfew" in entire state from March 28. The state government has prohibited gatherings of more than five people in public places from 8pm to 7am across the state and put public places like gardens, beaches and seafronts out of bounds between 8pm to 7 am.
All cinema halls, malls, restaurants and auditoriums will also remain shut from 8pm to 7am.
Maharashtra on Saturday recorded a slight drop in daily Covid-19 cases and a marginal rise in Covid-19 deaths. Maharashtra recorded 35,726 new Covid-19 cases and 166 deaths on Saturday.
