DJarquitectura has built ‘revolucionenelpatio’, a spiral structure for acts and artistic presentations, as an outdoor extension of a university in malaga, spain. the concrete construction, set into one of the courtyards, spirals upwards in order to connect with the different levels of the surrounding buildings. at the same time, it serves as a sign of inspiration and creativity.DJarquitectura sets spiral concrete structure for creative acts in university courtyard, spainall images courtesy of jesus granada & nicolás díaz

DJarquitectura sought to eliminate the existing structures, renovate the facilities to prepare them for adequate use, and create a place for acts and creative activities. the fine arts faculty decided to occupy the old building of the university’s engineering school, which is completed by three disparate buildings finished on different periods, each of them functioning with an autonomous design. meanwhile, the constructions have generated a series of voids, occupied by roofs and facilities, offering a desolate appearance. the existing floor is replaced by a new one that resolves accessibility issues and recovers the entry’s original levels. the concrete structure, embedded in the courtyard, spirals upwards looking for the buildings’ different plane. at the same time, some platforms and stairs with variable widths allow the expansion of the classrooms towards the outside.DJarquitectura sets spiral concrete structure for creative acts in university courtyard, spain

‘an architecture built only of bone, without muscles or skin’ emerges twirling from the ground and attaches itself to the surrounding structures. this way, the new intervention adds a new identity to this courtyard, transforming the existing arrangement into another language.

‘to the requirements we add the condition that it must connect the different buildings, facilitating their relationship, accessibility and evacuation’, mention the architects.DJarquitectura sets spiral concrete structure for creative acts in university courtyard, spainDJarquitectura sets spiral concrete structure for creative acts in university courtyard, spainrevolucionenelpatio 5revolucionenelpatio 7
