Immunisation experts meet

March 24, 2021

An expert committee today reported that there are two death cases with suspected serious adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination.

The Expert Committee on Clinical Events Assessment Following COVID-19 Immunisation elaborated on the two cases after its meeting this afternoon.

The cases involve a 80-year-old woman with a history of heart-related disease and a 60-year-old man with a history of high blood pressure.

The committee's Co-convenor Dr Lee Cheuk-kwong said: “About today’s reported case of death, he is a 60-year-old gentleman who had a history of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and carotid artery disease.

“On March 23, he had chest discomfort and then, in the early morning, he was found unresponsive at home, and was resuscitated and certified dead at the accident and emergency department.

“Based on his medical history and the symptoms, we believe that there may be a high possibility that cardiovascular disease had led to his death.”

Dr Lee added that the committee needed to obtain more information and a post-mortem report to confirm the man's cause of death.

Regarding the 80-year-old woman, the committee noted that her cause of death was not directly associated with the vaccination.
