Wisconsin Badgers Play Gotham City University in ‘Justice League’ Snyder Cut

The only spoiler in this story is who wins the fictional football game.

If you are among the slobbering fans who begged for a new cut of the flopped 2017 Justice League, or if you just had four whole hours to kill this week, you may have just watched Zack Snyder’s re-imagined superhero blockbuster.

Snyder’s Justice League isn’t your typical director’s cut, which usually include extra screen time, but very little change to the driving story. This was an entirely new film, complete with new characters, a change in plot and our very own Badgers playing football against Gotham City University.

Unsurprisingly, the Badgers lose. But even losing is an improvement from being cut from the movie entirely like in Joss Whedon’s monstrosity.

“Quality loss against a formidable opponent,” the Badgers tweeted Thursday.

The game was part of the character development for Victor Stone, aka Cyborg, played by Ray Fisher. Stone was a football player with a promising future and daddy issues. In this scene, we see him win a close game against the Badgers (37-35) for his GCU teammates only to look up and see that his father wasn’t there to watch, again. This is all right before the accident that nearly took his life, and drove his father to turn him into a complicated and intriguing superhero.

Again, all of this delicious backstory – and that awesome moment where Badgers fans got to see their team on the big screen – was cut from the original film. The UW student section has a chant they use when players, and sometimes officials, mess up. It goes like this: “You f***** up! You f***** up!” That chant might be aimed at Whedon and other studio execs as more and more Badgers fans learn their team was cut from the original Justice League.
