Police and firefighter/paramedics from Arlington Heights responded about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 20, 2021 to a report of a crash with entrapment at Algonquin Road just west of Kennicott Avenue in Arlington Heights.

Engine 3’s crew on arrival by 6:31 p.m. reported heavy extrication needed with one person pinned in the vehicle. Firefighter/paramedics worked with extrication tools to free a male in his 20s from a crashed minivan.

Firefighter/paramedics found the minivan driver unresponsive as well as trapped in the vehicle, which had plowed through a backyard fence and was wedged between two trees. Arlington Heights Fire Department firefighters and paramedics extricated the driver, who had apparently succumbed to multiple traumatic injuries received upon impact, according to the Arlington Heights Police Department. An official manner and cause will be determined by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Arlington Heights Police Department disclosed that several independent witnesses described seeing a silver minivan traveling eastbound Algonquin at what appeared to be a high rate of speed. Witness said the minivan suddenly struck and crossed the raised center concrete median, crossed both westbound lanes of Algonquin Road, traversed the parkway and sidewalk, and continued through a fence and into a residential backyard. The minivan rapidly decelerated while striking a large tree — a likely cause of fatal trauma. There were no passengers in the minivan — a silver 2001 Honda Odyssey minivan. No other vehicles were involved, and no pedestrians on the sidewalk or in the backyard were injured.

Algonquin Road was closed between Kennicott Avenue and the northwest driveway (stoplight) to the Walmart in Rolling Meadows for an extended crash investigation, and re-opened about midnight. The Speed Limit on Algonquin Road is 35 MPH according Google maps street view captured August 2019.
