Secretary for Food & Health Prof Sophia Chan today appealed to the public to receive the COVID-19 vaccination as soon as possible after several outbreaks were detected following the relaxation of social distancing measures.

At a media session this afternoon, Prof Chan noted that the two COVID-19 vaccines currently available in Hong Kong fulfilled the criteria of safety, efficacy and quality, and urged people to get vaccinated early to help contain the epidemic.

She said: "As we can see, after some relaxation of the social distancing measures, we have already observed some outbreaks. Therefore, with the arrival of our vaccine doses, it is important for everybody, it would be of the best interest, not only of the individual, but also of all the sectors to get vaccinated.

"Because with the vaccination, the more people getting vaccinated in Hong Kong, the faster we will be able to get herd immunity and the faster we would be able to get our normal daily life and also our economic situation back on track, let alone all the other incentives like travelling and all the rest of it.

"So I think it is important for everybody to embrace the opportunity that we have now in Hong Kong, that we can have a choice for our vaccination and also we have enough vaccine doses for everybody to be vaccinated."

Prof Chan added that if the overall percentage of people vaccinated against COVID-19 is lower than expected and the number of infections remains high, the Government cannot rule out tightening social distancing measures again, including requiring the closure of some premises.
