Nairobi motorists will continue to pay Sh200 in parking fees after a judge extended orders staying a planned hike to Sh400 till April 21.

Judge Anthony Mrima extended the order on Wednesday after a plea by the Consumer Federation of Kenya and Matatu Owners Association.

In revised rates last year, City Hall issued a notice increasing parking fees for both motorists and matatus. The public service vehicle owners would pay Sh1,000 daily.

But Cofek challenged the notice, saying it would hurt consumers seeking transport and parking services within the CBD.

The court heard that increasing parking fees when a majority of Kenyans were struggling to provide for their basic needs was unreasonable.

MOA also argued that once the matatu parking fees were increased, it would have a ripple effect leading to raised fares for commuters. If the proposed changes were implemented, the rights of consumers would be greatly violated even as they struggle with the high cost of living, the petitioners said.

The court also heard the county government had not ensured the security of vehicles despite receiving numerous consumer complaints about insecurity in the designated parking zones.

The case will come up for further directions on April 21.
