Suspected adverse case probed

March 2, 2021

The Department of Health said it received a report from the Hospital Authority tonight regarding a suspected serious adverse event following COVID-19 vaccination.

The case involved a 63-year-old man with chronic and respiratory diseases. He received the COVID-19 jab at Kwun Chung Sports Centre Community Vaccination Centre in Jordan on February 26.

He sought treatment from Queen Elizabeth Hospital due to shortness of breath at around 1.30am on February 28 and was preliminarily diagnosed with bronchitis. He was hospitalised at around 3am but his condition deterioriated and passed away at around 6am.

The department said it immediately contacted the authority to obtain more information for investigation and evaluation, adding the causal relationship with the vaccination could not be ascertained at the moment.

The department will pass the case to the Expert Committee on Clinical Events Assessment Following COVID-19 Immunisation for causality assessment, and the assessment result will be released.
