Chief U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell was furious. The judge, who leads the Washington, D.C., trial court, last week was faced with deciding whether to agree with a magistrate judge in another district in allowing a man who broke into Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office to be released pending trial, or order his detention pending trial.

Howell had already stayed the other judge’s ruling allowing the release of Richard Barnett. Audibly livid during the virtual hearing, she described how she could still see the National Guard troops stationed on the National Mall from her chambers, just blocks from the U.S. Capitol building. And she didn’t hold back in condemning both Barnett and the hundreds of others who stormed Congress during the special session to certify the election results.
