WALNUT CREEK, CA — Using the coronavirus stay-at-home order to complete projects is a great way to inconvenience the least amount of people.

BART closed part of the parking garage at the Walnut Creek station Monday as part of a project to upgrade the lighting system in the structure.

The six-week project is part of a plan to upgrade lighting at 14 parking garages throughout the BART system, with more than 10,500 fixtures being replaced and new lighting controls added systemwide.

At Walnut Creek, the first phase of the project will close all levels above the ground floor of the parking garage. When that work is completed, the first floor will be closed with the exception of disabled parking spaces, according to BART.

Hayward was the first station to have the lighting improvement upgrades at its parking garage, and the rest are scheduled to be done by October. Those stations are Millbrae, Fruitvale, Daly City, Pleasant Hill, Concord, San Bruno, MacArthur, Colma, Dublin/Pleasanton, Richmond, El Cerrito del Norte, and South San Francisco.
