After making his fortune by selling much-needed air-conditioning units, refrigerators and freezers on his sun-baked native island of Jamaica, entrepreneur Gordon Stewart, known since childhood as “Butch,” founded the popular Sandals and Beaches holiday resorts now scattered around the Caribbean and said to have made him a billionaire.

They were among the first in the Caribbean to offer “all-inclusive” vacations, with food and drinks free from their innovative swim-up pool bars. He was much loved on his island for what he did for its vital tourism industry, and his face was probably the most recognized in Jamaica behind that of the island’s Olympic gold medalist sprinter Usain Bolt.
