Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office Approves One Count of First-Degree Murder in the Shooting Death of Christina Czuj

Fatal shooting investigation on Palatine Road near Barrington Road near Inverness and Barrington Township early New Year’s Day, Friday, January 1, 2021.

The Illinois State Police announced Sunday morning January 3, 2021 that Illinois State Police (ISP) District 15 Investigations Agents arrested John H. Breseman, a 50-year-old male of Barrington, Illinois, for the shooting of Christina Czuj, a 54-year-old female from Sleepy Hollow, IL, that occurred on Friday, Jan. 1, 2021.




Firefighter/paramedics and local police agencies responded about 1:15 a.m. Friday, January 1, 2021 near the intersection of Barrington Road and Palatine Road near Barrington Hills and Inverness to a report of a shooting in a silver Chevrolet pickup truck.

On January 1, 2021, at approximately 1:34 a.m., ISP District 15 units were dispatched to Barrington Road and Palatine Road in Barrington Hills, IL, Cook County and upon arrival, officers learned the incident involved a homicide. Preliminary details indicated the male driver, John H. Breseman, a 50-year-old male of Barrington, IL placed an emergency call admitting to shooting the female passenger, Christina Czuj, a 54-year-old female of Sleepy Hollow, IL, on the ramp from Interstate 90 westbound to Barrington Road in Barrington, IL in Cook County. As a result, Breseman was taken into custody without incident and a thorough investigation by ISP District 15 Investigations Agents ensued.




On January 2, 2021, after multiple search warrants were executed and the autopsy of Cuzuj was completed, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved one count of First-Degree Murder against Breseman relating to the shooting on Jan.1, 2021 in Barrington. Breseman is being held at the Cook County Jail pending a bond hearing. No further information is available at this time, according to the Illinois State Police.
