Orange County reports 26 deaths in first coronavirus update of new year

The Orange County Health Care Agency reported 26 coronavirus deaths and 4,406 new infections on Saturday in its first report of the year for the county’s virus transmission.

The death toll due to COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, rose to 1,901 fatalities, and the cumulative cases experienced as a county stands at 161,589.

Orange County hospitalizations because of the virus are at 2,097, with 501 of those patients being treated in intensive care units.

Over the last two days, there were 23,385 reported tests for the virus countywide, bringing the total administered to 2,076,496.

The healthcare agency estimates that 91,679 people in the county who have contracted the virus have recovered.

Orange County is carrying seven-day averages of 53.5 daily new cases per 100,000 residents and a testing positivity rate of 16.9%. Those numbers come with a seven-day lag.

The next update on the county’s coronavirus numbers is scheduled to come on Monday.

Here are the latest cumulative coronavirus case counts and COVID-19 deaths for select cities in Orange County:

  • Santa Ana: 30,710 cases; 376 deaths
  • Anaheim: 27,417 cases; 409 deaths
  • Huntington Beach: 6,444 cases; 101 deaths
  • Costa Mesa: 5,328 cases; 55 deaths
  • Irvine: 5,900 cases; 23 deaths
  • Newport Beach: 2,318 cases; 28 deaths
  • Fountain Valley: 2,063 cases; 32 deaths
  • Laguna Beach: 513 cases; fewer than five deaths

Here are the case counts by age group, followed by deaths:

  • 0 to 17: 15,189 cases; one death
  • 18 to 24: 22,707 cases; five deaths
  • 25 to 34: 33,426 cases; 27 deaths
  • 35 to 44: 25,599 cases; 45 deaths
  • 45 to 54: 26,154 cases; 143 deaths
  • 55 to 64: 19,988 cases; 263 deaths
  • 65 to 74: 9,982 cases; 370 deaths
  • 75 to 84: 4,985 cases; 424 deaths
  • 85 and older: 3,465 cases; 623 deaths
