Resident and firefighter injured in extra alarm apartment fire on Algonquin Road Rolling Meadows
Police, firefighters and paramedics from Rolling Meadows responded about 1:37 a.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2020 to an activated fire alarm immediately followed by a report at 1:39 a.m. of an apartment/condo fire in a unit at 2412 Algonquin Road Rolling Meadows.
Rolling Meadows Fire Department Truck 15’s crew reported smoke and fire showing from the side of the building. The fire alarm was upgraded to a Working Fire by 1:44 a.m.
A resident was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to Northwest Community Hospital. An Arlington Heights firefighter was also injured while fighting the fire, and transported to Northwest Community Hospital, where he was treated and released by 4:45 a.m.
A cat was rescued by firefighters from a first floor condo unit, and police had to chase one man to rescue him from danger after he went inside the condo unit to look for his pets. A cat and a small dog were still inside the condo unit and were missing as of 3:30 a.m.
Intense fire consumed a condo unit and spread to other units while heavy smoke continued to push out of the building for almost an hour. A MABAS Division 1 Box Alarm #1 was activated by 2:27 a.m. with mutual aid assignments to firefighters, paramedics and command officers from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove Township, Elk Grove Village, Hoffman Estates, Mount Prospect, Palatine, Palatine Rural FPD, and Schaumburg.
Itasca, Long Grove Fire Protection District and other fire departments were assigned to cover Rolling Meadows fire stations while on-scene firefighters fought to extinguish the fire. An Itasca fire engine crew was assigned to move up to the scene.
The Box Alarm was struck out by 3:13 a.m.
