Fireground scene at condo apartment fire on Dundee Quarter in Palatine Wednesday morning December 23, 2020.

Police and firefighters from Palatine responded at 8:33 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2020, to a report of fire coming from the roof of condo apartment building at 15 B Dundee Quarter in Palatine. While en route, the alarm was upgraded due to multiple 9-1-1 phone calls of fire showing through the roof. One of the fire crews responding saw flames and smoke showing as they approached on Dundee Road.

The first Palatine Fire Department crews arrived on the scene of the 3-story condo apartment building at 8:37 a.m. The first arriving engine initiated a transitional attack while other members stretched a hose line to the third floor. Once inside, they found heavy fire conditions throughout the entire attic. Multiple crews were used to deploy two additional hose lines and pull the ceiling to expose the fire. Holes were cut from the exterior into the mansard roof to help extinguish the fire. The fire was declared under control at 9:38 a.m. A total of eleven units were damaged from fire, smoke and water. Firefighters continued to perform ventilation, overhaul, and investigative activities for a significant duration.

No civilians or firefighters were injured in the fire. Damage estimates were not available at the time of this release from Palatine Fire Department. The cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time. Eleven units were left uninhabitable and Red Cross was on the scene to help displaced residents.

The fire stop was impressive considering high winds were present to enhance combustion and fire. At 8:51 a.m. winds reported at O’Hare International Airport were 22 MPH and gusting to 38 MPH from the south; and at 9:51 a.m. winds were 28 MPH and gusting to 41 MPH from the south.

The emergency response brought 34 firefighters staffing five engines, two aerial devices, four ambulances, and one rescue squad which responded to the scene along with seven Command Officers. During the incident, a unit from the Fox River Grove Fire Protection District stood by in a Palatine fire station to provide coverage for any additional calls. Palatine Police Officers assisted with evacuation and controlled traffic at the scene.

The Palatine Fire Department reminds everyone that working smoke alarms save lives, and to make sure that smoke alarms are tested monthly, and are less than 10 years old. For more information on fire safety visit www.palatine.il.us or www.NFPA.org
