The Guinness World record for Largest Projected Videogame Display has been set by games console company XBox, with a projection onto the snow-clad Copper Mountain in Colorado in the US.

The projection display covered 1,773.6 sqm (18,090 sq ft) at an altitude of 11,000 ft – one of the highest elevation projections ever produced – and was organised to celebrate the launch of the Destiny 2: Beyond Light game.

US experiential marketing agency BeCore which produced the brand activation worked with video game developer Bungie and snowboarder Grant Giller who played the game on the mountain canvas.

3D projection mapping specialist PaintScaping was responsible for mapping the mountain with a projection which was 180.15ft x 105.97ft . Three Barco UDX-4K40 Flex projectors were provided by rental and staging firm Rentex for the event on 23 November.

"It was a treat to work with the Barco UDX-4K40 projectors for this super-cool project,” says Philippe Bergeron, president of PaintScaping. “We knew that for a project like this, we would need reliability, low latency, and high-brightness - which is why we turned to Barco UDX-4K40 projectors.”

PaintScaping gained fame this summer by producing the world’s first 3D mapping on an operational rocket, at Cape Canaveral. The projection mapping specialist has previously worked on the largest mapping ever in the USA, for Britney Spears, in Las Vegas, on Park MGM. At 550ft wide, and 26 stories high, PaintScaping used 28 Barco UDX 32k to create the massive projection. PaintScaping also used Barco projectors for the largest holiday display on a natural canvas, in Sedona, Arizona, in 2018.

“Barco is proud to provide industry-leading laser phosphor technology to enable bright outcomes like these exciting large-scale projection projects. When combined with the limitless creativity and talent of our partners, the pay-off is really amazing,” said John Steinhauer, vice president of entertainment sales at Barco. “PaintScaping has once again shown its remarkable capabilities, and we are proud to have been part of this Guinness World Records Title of the Largest Projected Videogame Display.”
