According to the old football cliché, one of the hallmarks of a successful season is that you “play to your strengths.” This classic coaching strategy is easily applied to your service-provider business. You have served your customers in many unique and interesting ways that differentiate you from your competitors, but have you ever taken a step back and thought strategically about the solutions that you’re uniquely equipped to deliver? What about solutions you’ve implemented that solved a customer-specific problem in a creative way? Look at the points of differentiation; once identified, you know you have set yourself apart from the competition, and you can build on that solution. From there, you can look to “productize” by taking a unique solution and turning it into a product for other customers.Shutterstock

Splunk is acquiring Flowmill, a network performance monitoring (NPM) company, to extend its observability platform.

With Flowmill, Splunk gives customers the ability to ingest, analyze and take action on additional cloud network and infrastructure data. They can then resolve network-related issues, optimize network performance and reduce network costs.

The acquisition should close this quarter. Splunk isn’t saying how much it spent on Flowmill.

Tim Tully is Splunk‘s senior vice president and CTO.

“Given we’ve only announced our intent to acquire Flowmill and the deal has not yet closed, we cannot elaborate further just yet on what this means for Splunk’s partners,” he said. “We continue to provide value to our partners as we expand our observability offerings. Flowmill brings a depth of expertise in NPM and will enhance Splunk’s Observability Suite.”

Complementing Previous Acquisitions

Splunk recently acquired Plumbr, an application performance monitoring (APM) company. It’s also buying Rigor, a digital experience monitoring (DEM) company. Rigor offers advanced synthetic monitoring and optimization tools. Both acquisitions increase Splunk’s observability platform capabilities.

The Splunk Observability Suite includes solutions for infrastructure monitoring, application performance monitoring, digital experience monitoring, log investigation and incident response.

“Following our recent acquisitions of Plumbr and Rigor to expand our APM and DEM capabilities, today’s acquisition further positions Splunk as the only company that can help organizations across their entire cloud journey to modern software architectures,” Tully said. “Flowmill will complement Splunk’s core Observability Suite and will give customers the ability to address every APM, DEM and NPM need across all types of applications and infrastructures.”

“Splunk is always evaluating market opportunities that are additive to our own development efforts,” Tully said.

“Flowmill’s approach to building systems that support full-fidelity, real-time, high-cardinality ingestions and analysis aligns well with Splunk’s vision for observability,” said Jonathan Perry, Flowmill’s founder and CEO. “ We’re thrilled to join Splunk and bring … next-generation NPM to the Splunk Observability Suite.”
