Person dies after being shot in broad daylight in Reno parking lot Thursday morning

A person died after being shot mid-morning in a parking lot off Neil Road Thursday, according to Reno police. 

Crime scene tape surrounded clothing and bloodstains at the scene as police continued their investigation into the afternoon Thursday. 

Officer Travis Warren, public information officer for the Reno Police Department, said that officers responded to a call about a battery with a deadly weapon in the Wells Fargo parking lot on Neil Road at approximately 10:28 a.m. 

Officers found a victim with a gunshot wound, who was taken to the hospital. The victim, who has not been identified, died at the hospital.

Reno police were not immediately able to determine the cause of the fight. However, with help from witnesses, officers were able to quickly detain the other person involved with the shooting, Warren said. The identity of that person has not been released. 

"There's no further danger or risk to the community," Warren said, "but we do ask that if anybody was here, or in the area and have seen anything, they reach out to us."

Smithridge Elementary and Pine Middle School were placed on lockdown Thursday morning due to police activity in the area. 

Megan Downs, communication manager for the Washoe County School District, said that the schools were placed on a code yellow lockdown - meaning that the doors outside were locked but activities continued inside. 

The lockdown was enforced at approximately 10:40 a.m. and the lockdown was lifted at 11:15 a.m, according to Downs.
