About 200 firefighters responded to a 3-11 Alarm high-rise fire on Jewelers Row at Wabash Avenue and Madison Street in The Loop Thursday morning.
Police and firefighter/paramedics from Chicago responded about 3:49 a.m. Thursday, November 12, 2020 to a report of a commercial building fire at Jewelers Center at the Maller Building, 5 South Wabash Avenue in Chicago. CFD Battalion 1 on arrival at 3:52 a.m. reported nothing showing from a 30-story, partially-sprinklered high-rise. At about 3:57 a.m. Battalion 1 requested a Full Still response. At 4:04 a.m. Battalion 1 reported a fire on the 10th Floor and requested a Still and Box response.
The fire was in Suite 1000 on the 10th floor with primary searches underway by about 4:15 a.m.

A Still and Box Alarm was activated by . An EMS Plan 1 was also activated.
A 2-11 Alarm was activated by 4:22 a.m. on orders of 2-2-1.
A 3-11 Alarm was activated by 4:32 a.m. on orders of 2-1-33.
Forward Fire, Fire Attack, RIT and Support was set up, but described as making very little progress with the fire as of 4:41 a.m. Rapid Ascent Teams (RAT) high-rise search and rescue units were also deployed.
Engine 14’s crew reported witnessing a box truck flip on its side while responding to the 3-11 Alarm Fire at 4:44 a.m.
An EMS command officer reported three victims at 4:47 a.m. One firefighter was transported as a “stable” Code Red and two civilian victims were medical refusals.
Fire command reported by 5:02 that was no known night time occupancy of the building, that there was water on the fire, and that top to bottom searches were complete in both stairwells.

Command reported at 5:16 a.m. that Engine 13 led out a line on the east stairwell. Primary searches were completed on the 11th and the 12th floor. One window on the south side of the building was vented.
The fire was declared out by 5:19 a.m. Primary search was completed on the fire floor and on five floors above the fire. Secondary searches were also underway by about 5:19 a.m.
EMS command reported at 5:20 a.m. that there were no changes in status in the number of victims or patients (no additional victims). Eventually on fire firefighter and one commanding officer were treated for heat exhaustion at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The 3-11 Alarm was struck out on orders of 2-1-10 by 5:20 a.m.
Street closures continued into the morning rush hour in the area of Madison and Wabash. CTA buses with routes in the area were re-routed.
According to Emporis, Maller’s Building is a 21-story steel structure with the lower 13 floors consisting of a large jewelry mall with several individual shops open to the public.
