Illinois State Police and firefighter/paramedics from Schaumburg responded about 2:43 a.m. Friday, October 23 2020 to a report of a serious crash with entrapment after a blue passenger car rear-ended a semi-trailer truck on northbound IL-53/I-290 near Golf Road. The male driver was entrapped and seriously injured, and is suspected of driving under the influence. A female passenger suffered injures initially believed to be non-life-threatening.

Firefighter/paramedics worked with extrication tools to free two people from a crashed passenger vehicle with passenger compartment intrusion by the rear of a semi-trailer truck to the dashboard of the passenger car. Tyler Z. Soto, 21, was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where he was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Tyler Z. Soto, 21, of Mundelein was also charged with driving under the influence, according to Illinois State Police.

A passenger, Veronica Mojica Diaz, 19, of Carpentersville was transported to a nearby hospital, but her injuries were initially believed to be minor injuries.

The driver of the semi-trailer truck, Donald Edward Henriott, 54, of Apopka, Florida, was not injured.

The initial Illinois State Police investigation indicates that Tyler Z. Soto was the driver of a northbound 2005 Acura TL sedan, and failed to reduce his speed when he struck the rear of a 2015 Freightliner semi-trailer truck combination that was also northbound on I-290/IL-53 between Woodfield Road and Golf Road near Schaumburg.

The Acura TL front end was wedged underneath the semi-trailer, while the rear of the Acura spun 90 degrees to the right.

Two lanes of the expressway and the ramp from Woodfield Road east frontage to I-290/IL-53 were closed during the crash investigation. All lanes were reopened by 6:00 a.m. NBC Sky 5’s Mike Lorber captured an aerial image of the crash just before the vehicles were towed from the scene. Traffic was moving with only slight congestion just before the vehicles were towed away.
