A professional with a Commercial Wildlife Permit lethally removed two coyotes in September 2020 from residential neighborhoods on both sides of Arlington Heights Road, just south of Palatine Road, according to a source familiar with both incidents. The locations were within a few blocks south of Palatine Road and within a few blocks east and west of Arlington Heights Road in Arlington Heights.
Apparently, the two coyotes reached a categorization that they were considered an immediate threat to people, especially children, and pets. A witness reported the coyotes were traveling in neighborhoods and on streets, front lawns and backyards, unphased by humans, during daytime hours.
Lethal removal is accomplished through either trapping, euthanasia, or shooting. In both cases in Arlington Heights in September 2020, the coyotes were lethally removed by shooting with a .22 caliber rifle.
The wildlife removal professional used a hunting blind to hide from the coyote and sound effects to attract at least one of the coyotes that was killed. Also, at least one of the coyotes had a severe case of mange and moved about with a limp. In Arlington Heights, a wildlife removal professional must obtain permission from the Arlington Heights Police Department to fire a weapon to euthanize or lethally remove a coyote.
There are instances where coyote habituation is so severe that the coyotes can be considered an immediate threat to people, especially children and pets. Severe habituation is when removal is warranted.
Habituation
Habituation is a learned behavior in which an animal’s response to stimuli (presence of humans) decreases over time. Basically, the animal gets used to something happening, and no longer responds.
According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (ILDNR), coyotes are difficult to trap or shoot, and removal by shooting or trapping should be undertaken only by professionals.
