Multiple Rescues for Stalled Elevators Due to Power Failure at Alexian Brothers Medical Center Elk Grove Village

Police and firefighter/paramedics from Elk Grove Village responded about 11:11 a.m. Monday, October 2020 to a report of a all elevators stalled with occupants in the elevators at both the Eberle Building and the Wimmer Building at Alexian Brothers Medical Center, 800 West Biesterfield Road in Elk Grove Village. Both buildings are located on the east side of the Alexian Brothers Medical Center campus.

Hospital security personnel released some people by the time firefighter/paramedics arrived, Elk Grove Village firefighter/paramedics continued to work past 12:20 p.m. to help people get to the ground floor. Five to ten people requiring treatment needed to get down to the ground floor for their treatment. Some patients were brought to the fourth floor in the parking garage and then driven to ground level in a hospital security vehicle and a fire department vehicle.

The source of the problem was initially believed to be a ComEd issue. None of the elevators in the Wimmer Building were operating, but all people were rescued from the Wimmer Building elevators by 11:23 a.m.

Two people remained in a stalled elevator in the Eberle Building at about 11:25 p.m.

Firefighters were assigned to rescue some patients using a stair chair down five flights of stairs.

The elevator or elevators were functioning properly in the Cancer Center.

The Eberle Building and Wimmer Building both contain doctors’ offices and it was confirmed taht both buildings lost electric power Monday morning.

ComEd was dispatched to the scene for repair and restoration of power. Firefighters remained on scene past 12:50 p.m. and started to return fire equipment about 1:25 p.m.

According to ComEd, the power outage to the Eberle Building and the Wimmer Building may involved repairs lasting another 6 to 8 hours, which would put power restoration at 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
