oslo-based studio rever & drage architects introduces its ‘farstadsanden’ addition to the national norwegian scenic routes program. sited along the coastal region of hustadvika, the project is comprised of three main components — a parking area, a boundary fence and a toilet building. while the surrounding area and beach are popular for recreation, hiking, surfing and kiting, the former parking and service capacity was inadequate for handling the increasing numbers of visitors.

rever & drage architects sensitively designs its farstadsanden parking area to maintain a minimal impact on the vulnerable landscape. the parking requirements vary between a typical day, when there maybe only 10-20 parked cars and some peak days when there may be a need for 150 parking spaces. to avoid introducing a large asphalt field that would be largely visible across the agricultural area, the main parking area surface is made of reinforced grass paving. this provides a robust ground cover and at the same time blends into its natural context.

to respect the nearby farms, previously bothered by trespassing campers, rever & drage guides visitors with a fence that adapts to the broad norwegian landscape. the wooden rails rise to such a height that offers visitors a place to rest. the fence is constructed with a customized steel I-beam lowered into drainage pipes, and wooden rails slid in from the sides. this method allows the wooden rails to interlock without nails or screws and they can be replaced when needed by reversing the operation. the toilet building is withdrawn, at the end of a line of trees. it contains two toilets, a maintenance room and an outdoor shower. its aluminium construction withstands the harsh weather conditions of the area affected by salt spray.
