Police and firefighter/paramedics from Palatine responded about 1:01 p.m. Saturday, October 3, 2020 to a report of a single-vehicle motorcycle at Parking Lot 12 near the baseball diamond off Roselle Road at Harper College, 1200 West Algonquin Road in Palatine. The crash occurred during a motorcycle training program administered by Harper College.

Prior to arrival of Palatine paramedics on the scene, CPR was administered to a female victim, age 66. The female resident of Winfield, Illinois was transported by Palatine firefighter/paramedics to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where she was pronounced dead about 2:05 p.m.

The Harper College Police Department is investigating the crash with support from Palatine police. The woman crashed her motorcycle into a building near the training site.

Students are required to wear the following during the motorcycle training …

Helmet – a DOT certified 3/4 or full-face helmet (a 3/4 helmet will be provided if you do not have a helmet of your own, DOT half shell helmets will be allowed only in the Advanced RiderCourse)

Protective eyewear – prescription or sunglasses, goggles, face shield

Long sleeve jacket or shirt – no holes

Long pants – denim or other sturdy material (no sweat pants, no yoga pants, no hospital scrubs, no holes)

Full-fingered gloves – leather preferred

Over-the-ankle footwear – sturdy material (not cloth), must completely cover ankle

The woman was participating in a motorcycle safety training class at Harper College in a parking lot on the northwest side of the Palatine campus that is administered by Harper College on behalf of the Illinois Department of Transportation.

“On behalf of the entire Harper College community, I want to extend my sincerest condolences to her family and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.”

— Harper College President Dr. Avis Proctor

Along with the Palatine location, Harper College administers the training program at 14 sites in northern Illinois. The woman was participating in the Three Wheel Basic Rider Course — a 20-hour classroom and on-motorcycle class — and it was day two of the three-day program when the accident occurred, according to a release from Harper College.

Classes have been conducted with limited size because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and some of the 14 locations’ classes have been canceled due to the pandemic.
