Schumacher sets the example for his competitors: "Can learn a lot from him"

The battle in Formula 2 this year is exciting. With junior talents from Renault, Ferrari and Red Bull Racing, there's plenty to fight for, but the most exciting battle is perhaps at Prema, where Robert Shwartzman and Mick Schumacher are fighting for a place in Formula 1.

Prior to the F2 season in 2020, the duel at Prema was already what many people were looking forward to. Mick Schumacher had made a great debut in Formula 2, but how would he fare in the second year if Shwartzman were to join him. Shwartzman is a reigning Formula 3 champion and therefore a great challenger.

Who can go to Formula 1?

"We have known each other since 2018 when we raced against each other in Formula 3. For me, it's a normal teammate, but I don't have to explain his name to you in Germany. For me, it's a rival like any other driver, but your teammate is your first competitor," says Shwartzman to Bild.

With a year's experience under his belt, the Russian can learn a lot from Schumacher. "He is definitely someone I compare myself to. It's a huge challenge because he gained a lot of experience last year, so I can learn a lot from him. I see Mick as a driver I definitely want to beat in the future''.

Shwartzman versus Schumacher

Shwartzman managed that quite well at the beginning of the season. The Russian took the lead in the championship and seemed to be the most consistent driver, but he struggled in the midseason. As a result, Shwartzman has now dropped to fourth place in the general classification, but with only 21 points behind leader Schumacher, nothing has been lost at all.

"It's not just between us, because everyone in Formula 2 wants to go to Formula 1. I think you just have to achieve good results and show that you can also be a team player. I'm working on that and I want to show everyone that I deserve a place in F1. I see it this way: the person who works the hardest and achieves the best results takes the biggest step towards a good future," concludes the Ferrari-junior.
