Wright’s Greenhouse calling this their best year yet

Wright’s Greenhouse in Melfort and Beatty will close for the season on Friday after the busiest year in the past 42.

Owner Angie Bragg said people seemed to have more time to focus on their gardens amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“People didn’t want to travel too far so they were staying at home and making their yards and homes look nice,” Bragg said. “We hope it continues on this trend but if things get back to where they were, then people get back to their regular lives.”

On a typical year, the greenhouse has a lot of plants leftover at the end of the planting season that go to compost, but now Bragg is wondering how to plan for next season.

“This is an anomaly year because of the pandemic,” Bragg said. “We are hoping that even half of the people continue gardening even though our lives might be back to where they were before the pandemic.”

The extreme heat in both July and August have proven difficult for many gardeners and Bragg is hoping that doesn’t discourage people from planting a garden again.

“We typically have had these days for a number of years,” Bragg said. “It took a little extra work with watering almost every day, instead of maybe twice a week.”

All remaining perennials, annuals, herbs, hanging baskets, and planters can be purchased by donation to be presented to the North East SPCA (NESPCA).

“We have supported the NESPCA over the last few years with a trade show and barbecue in August,” Bragg said. “We weren’t able to host that this year so this is a way of giving back to them.”

Succulents, house plants, and garden decor are not included.

Both of the greenhouse locations will re-open in November for the Christmas season.
