Fire at Vacant Wyman-Gordon Power Plant, 144th St and Wood St in Dixmoor

Police from Dixmoor and firefighters from Harvey responded about 10:30 p.m. Thursday July 23, 2020 to a commercial building fire with “heavy fire” showing at 144th Street and Wood Street in Dixmoor. The building is the former site of the Wyman-Gordon Ingalls-Shepard Division Power Plant and originally the Ingalls-Shepard Forging Co.

A Full Still Alarm #35-3 was activated at 10:32 p.m. Firefighters from Country Club Hills and paramedics from Bud’s Ambulance responded to the scene. Firefighters from Tinley Park stood by in a Harvey fire station.

The fire was knocked by 10:45 p.m. and the Full Still Alarm was struck out by 10:47 p.m.

On this site, a well-known forging and titanium technology company was located that made parts for automobiles, military aircraft, and other aircraft. The Ingalls-Shepard Division closed down at the location in 1986.

According to the NWS Chicago Midway International Airport, the wind was North at 6 MPH with Air Temperature 72°F and a Relative Humidity of 73% (Dew Point 63°F). Possible asbestos hazard at this location.
