Starting Tuesday, parking rates at smart meters are going up.

Changes are coming this week to parking meter enforcement in Milwaukee.Starting Tuesday, parking rates at smart meters are going up.Smart meters allow drivers to pay with coins, credit cards or the MKE Park app.Smart meters that were $1.50 will now be $2.Smart meters that were $1 will increase to $1.25.And smart meters that were $0.50 will now be $0.75.Smart meters began replacing aging meters after the city implemented a plan two years ago.The city said this was the first parking meter rate increase in more than 10 years.Milwaukee has spent more than $3 million on the new smart meters.They have been installed in the central business district and Historic Third Ward.Smart meters will be installed in other areas soon.Parking enforcement officers will begin ticketing drivers at expired meters beginning Tuesday.Since resuming meter enforcement earlier this month, drivers have received warnings rather than citations.The Department of Public Works suspended meter enforcement in March because of the coronavirus pandemic.The city said the move meant more than $6 million in lost revenue.
