A male murder suspect with a semi-automatic handgun is dead after he opened fire on Lake County Sheriff’s officers and United States Marshals as they tried to serve a warrant, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Team and the U.S. Marshals Service – Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force (USMS-GLRFTF) were attempting to execute an arrest warrant about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2020 in the area of Beach Road and Green Bay Road in Beach Park when a shootout occurred involving the suspect and law enforcement officers. The Lake County Sheiff’s Office stated that USMS-GLRFTF developed information the wanted subject was at a residence in the 38500 block of North Green Bay Road, Beach Park.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Christopher Covelli said as officers arrived to take the male suspect into custody, he was getting out of a vehicle parked in the driveway. The federal and local authorities were attempting to arrest the 24-year-old male suspect, who was wanted for a murder in Zion in 2018.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported USMS-GLRFTF developed information the wanted subject was at a residence in the 38500 block of North Green Bay Road, Beach Park.

“Preliminary information shows he was armed with a semi-automatic pistol and opened fire on the warrants team. Two members of the warrants team returned fire. The man was subsequently shot,” according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Christopher Covelli.

When the murder suspect was shot, CPR was administered by members of the warrants team at the scene until paramedics arrived. The mortally wounded suspect was transported to Vista East Hospital in Waukegan, where he was pronounced dead.

The two officers who fired their weapons received minor injuries. Five ambulances responded to the scene as a precaution for potential multiple shooting victims as a result of the shootout.

The suspect shot and killed today was wanted for a December 2018 murder of an 18-year-old in an apartment parking lot in Zion.

The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the officer-involved shooting on West Beach Road in Beach Park, just west of the Waukegan National Airport. Investigation by the Lake County Major Crime Task Force follows officer-involved-shooting protocol to conduct an independent investigation, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Green Bay Road between Wadsworth Road and Yorkhouse Road was closed Tuesday afternoon, and remained closed as of 7:30 p.m. There is an absolute closure between Ford Street and Suddard Street.
