Single-Vehicle Crash into Tree Kills Driver, Injures Passenger on St. James Street Just East of Meadow Drive in Rolling Meadows

Fatal crash on St. James east of Meadow Drive in Rolling Meadows Sunday morning June 14, 2020.

Police and firefighter/paramedics from Rolling Meadows responded about 6:32 a.m. Sunday June 14, 2020 to a report of a serious crash involving an SUV and a tree in the block of 2300 St James Street in Rolling Meadows. Police first on the scene reported a male adult unconscious and not breathing in the driver’s seat. Police were unable to open the door, and the fire department response was upgraded to an extrication operation response.

Firefighters extricated the driver from the vehicle by 6:46 a.m. and paramedics were working on the driver who was in traumatic cardiac arrest at the scene. Emergency Department personnel at Northwest Community Hospital personnel were notified of an incoming patient in traumatic cardiac arrest.

A second crash victim was initially not located. The passenger in the Jeep Commander was located at the scene, and he was ambulatory. He was transported to Northwest Community Hospital by Arlington Heights firefighter/paramedics.

Rolling Meadows police set up a crash scene investigation perimeter and called for the Major Case Assistance Team Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction team (MCAT-STAR) to respond to the scene. Investigators check curb and street markings, and took photographs and measurements.

St. James Street closed much of the day on Sunday.

Investigators did not comment on the cause of the crash, but observations at the scene indicated that the driver was traveling northeast on Meadow Drive, disobeyed a stop sign to St. James Street, failed to navigate a right turn curve on eastbound St. James Street, and left the roadway while striking a northside curb. The vehicle continued on a path eastbound in the parkway on the north side of St. James Street and hit a large tree head on. The Speed Limit on St. James Street is 20 MPH.
