Every year for the last few years, we’ve come to expect two phone releases from OnePlus. In May 2019, the company ushered in the OnePlus 7 Pro — a big and heavy phone with a curved display, pop-up selfie camera, and the highest price we’ve seen on a OnePlus product to-date.

A few months later in September, OnePlus followed up on the 7 Pro with the OnePlus 7T.

The 7T is less impressive in some regards, opting for a flat, non-curved display and no pop-up selfie cam, but it benefits from a slightly faster processor, keeps the excellent 90Hz AMOLED display, and is paired with an extremely competitive price.

From our review, specs, the best features, and more, here’s everything you need to know about the OnePlus 7T!

Top-notch features and specs at an incredible price

The OnePlus 7T continues the company’s legacy of releasing affordable, high-end Android smartphones. This one has all of the good aspects of the 7 Pro but forgoes the curved-glass, bezel-less display for something more traditional, and more usable. Superlative software, a versatile camera system, and excellent performance make for one heck of an Android phone.

Before you do anything, we recommend reading (and watching) our review of the OnePlus 7T.

There’s a lot to digest about this OnePlus flagship, so here’s the tl;dr — the 7T is an outstanding phone and one of the best values for a phone released in 2019. It has a great design, display, performance, and cameras while coming in at a price tag that gives phones like the iPhone 11 a run for their money.

If you like the idea of a handset that offers a legit flagship experience without spending $1000 or more, the 7T should be at the top of your radar.

One of the main draws to OnePlus phones is the idea of getting flagship specifications while spending a fraction of what other similarly-specced phones cost. That ideal is no different with the 7T.

Some of the 7T’s highlights include a Snapdragon 855+ processor, 6.55-inch Fluid AMOLED display, 8GB of RAM, and a 3,800 mAh battery.

A simplified spec sheet is provided here, but if you want the full rundown on everything the 7T brings to the table, be sure to check out the full spec loadout linked below.

Want a newer phone? Check out the OnePlus 8

If you’re in the market for a OnePlus phone but would rather have something a bit more modern, check out the OnePlus 8. Released in April 2020, the OnePlus 8 shares a lot of the same DNA with the 7T. However, it offers an overall better experience thanks to improved cameras, a larger battery, 5G connectivity, and the latest Snapdragon 865 chipset.

The OnePlus 8 is considerably more expensive than the 7T, but it is worth your consideration before throwing down any of your money.

On that note, if you want the highest-end and most powerful device OnePlus has ever created, the OnePlus 8 Pro is also something that should be on your radar.

This is how the 7T stacks up against the competition

It’s no secret that the OnePlus 7T doesn’t exist in a bubble, as is the case with every phone that’s released. As such, it’s important to see how the 7T compares with other handsets that are on the market.

Whether it be OnePlus’s own phones or ones from other companies, we’ve pitted the 7T with some of the top competition. Here’s how it stacks up!

We’re really digging the frosted glass back

oneplus-7t-review-25.jpg?itok=YxlnFuLj

The OnePlus 7T is a very pretty phone, with one of the main reasons for this being its frosted glass back.

You can get this glass in two colors — Glacier Blue or Frosted Silver — and while both look great, we’re quite smitten with the Glacier Blue model we received for review. The color changes from a darker, deeper blue at the top into a much lighter hue at the bottom of the phone, and in-person, it’s stunning.

Furthermore, the frosted nature of the glass helps to hide unwanted fingerprints and adds a nice bit of texture you won’t find on regular, non-frosted glass backs.

OnePlus’s 90Hz display looks incredible

oneplus-7t-review-_18.jpg?itok=bV4EXrdI

One of our favorite features of the OnePlus 7 Pro was its 90Hz Fluid AMOLED display, and we’re thrilled that it returned on the OnePlus 7T.

The 90Hz refresh rate is a big upgrade compared to the traditional 60Hz you find on other phones, and in real-world use, this means that everything on the 7T looks and feels much faster and smoother.

Whether you’re scrolling through your Twitter feed, playing games, or anything else where you’re interacting with the display, you’ll notice a significant increase in the overall smoothness of everything. You need to see this in person to really appreciate what we’re talking about, but trust us when we say that it’s difficult to go back to a normal 60Hz panel after experiencing the beauty of a 90Hz refresh rate for the first time.

Other aspects of the 7T’s display are strong, too. The AMOLED screen technology means you have deep blacks and rich colors, along with a great sharpness for everything thanks to the 2400 x 1080 resolution.

The cameras are really good!

If there’s one downside to OnePlus phones year after year, it has to be camera performance. This is an area in which OnePlus has struggled for a while, and while the company does make progress with each new phone it releases, it continues to trail behind much of the competition.

The OnePlus 7T doesn’t take the best photos around (devices like the iPhone 11, Galaxy Note 10, and Pixel 4 still outmatch it), but we also think you’ll be hard-pressed to be upset with the results that you get from the camera package here.

OnePlus outfitted the 7T with a triple camera setup, including a 48MP primary camera, 12MP telephoto camera, and 16MP ultra-wide camera.

The 7T takes good pictures. They’re not as impressive compared to Google and Apple’s latest, but for regular day-to-day use, you should be quite happy with the results you get.

What about wireless charging and water resistance?

oneplus-7t-review-_17.jpg?itok=alW5Yucv

OnePlus obviously had to cut some corners with the 7T to get the price where it’s at, and that’s seen in two key areas — wireless charging and water resistance. These are two things we’ve come to expect on most premium/mid-tier Android devices, but they aren’t anywhere to be found on OnePlus’s phone.

Wireless charging is totally absent from the OnePlus 7T. You can place it on your Qi charger as much as you want, but it won’t do a darn thing.

OnePlus claims that the phone is technically water-resistant and can withstand splashes/spills, but there’s no official IP rating to back up that claim. Furthermore, with water damage not being covered by OnePlus’s warranty, we recommend keeping the 7T as dry as possible.

Don’t forget about the OnePlus 7T Pro

oneplus-7t-pro-mclaren-edition-2.jpg?ito

In addition to the OnePlus 7T, there’s also the OnePlus 7T Pro that launched alongside it in select markets.

The 7T Pro is a much less exciting device, as it’s essentially the exact same as the OnePlus 7 Pro with an upgraded processor (Snapdragon 855+ vs. 855), a slightly bigger battery (4,085 mAh vs 4,000 mAh), new Macro mode for the camera app, and that’s about it.

The regular 7T Pro is not sold in the United States, but T-Mobile does sell the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren Edition. Mouthful of a name aside, the 5G McLaren variant of the 7T Pro has a special design, a free McLaren-inspired case, and supports T-Mobile’s 5G network.

You’ll definitely want to pick up a case

oneplus-7t-sandstone-case-dark.jpg?itok=

The OnePlus 7T looks fantastic, but as with most phones, you’ll want to outfit it with a case to keep it looking pristine for years to come.

As always, OnePlus has a solid selection of first-party cases, and the third-party market is quickly kicking out some awesome choices, too. We don’t blame you for not wanting to cover up the 7T’s stunning design, but at the same time, it won’t matter if you drop the phone and shatter it.

The phone is still available, but with a catch

oneplus-7t-hero-4.jpg?itok=Fm8IWmKg

If you’re eager to pick up a OnePlus 7T for yourself, you’re in luck. As of October 18, 2019, the phone is officially available for purchase in the U.S.

The phone was initially available in two configurations, including an unlocked one and a version made specifically for T-Mobile. Now, OnePlus is only selling the T-Mobile model.

OnePlus notes that it is “only compatible with full T-Mobile’s network” and that “even if a device supports some or all of the required frequencies for this carrier, it will not be able to connect unless the device is approved for this network.”

In other words, unless you’re a T-Mobile customer, the 7T is no longer a viable purchase.
