Video: Jase McClellan highlights
Alabama RB helped Aledo lead nation in scoring twice.
In 2013, Aledo (Texas) did something that no other high school football team had ever done — it scored over 1,000 points in a season.
With 1,023 points in 16 games, Aledo became the first high school team to reach the plateau. However, Aledo also did something that many other Texas teams had done before — it led the nation in scoring.
Research by MaxPreps shows that Texas has been responsible for 65 of the 109 teams that have led the nation in scoring since 1911. The reason for the Lone Star State's dominance is simple: Texas has held state playoffs since the early 1920s. As a result, Texas teams that have gone deep into the playoffs have been playing as many as 14 to 16 games for nearly 100 years while other states have only done so for around 50 years.
A total of 20 of the highest-scoring teams have also been named mythical national champions, including Washington (Massillon, Ohio), which has led the nation in scoring three times — all national championship seasons.
Four teams have led the nation in scoring without giving up a single point. Harrisburg Tech (Pa.) outscored its opponents 701-0 in 1919, Everett (Mass.) had a victory margin of 600-0 in 1914, Fostoria (Ohio) outscored opponents 595-0 in 1912 while Jersey Shore (Pa.) outscored its opponents 575-0 in 1922.
The highest-scoring team on the list for average is the Fostoria club, which averaged 74.4 points per game. Jersey Shore is second at 71.8.
Highest scoring teams were rounded up through the use of the MaxPreps leaderboards, the National Federation of High Schools record book, state association websites, the Cal-Hi Sports record book, Joe Lee Smith's Texas High School Football History website, the Georgia High School Football Historians website, research by Tim Hudak and his book "All the Way to No. 1", and Alabama High School Football History website.
Incoming Alabama running back Jase McClellan helped Aledo (Texas) lead high school football in scoring in 2016 and 2019.
