Former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Ryan Leaf was arrested Friday afternoon in Palm Springs, California, Friday for misdemeanor battery, according to TMZSports.com.

The former Washington State quarterback’s bail was set for $5,000.

Leaf’s short-lived and troubled NFL career has been very public over the years. Leaf was selected by the Chargers with the No. 2 overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft; however, things did not turn out like anyone hoped. He started 18 games, finishing with a disappointing 4-14 overall record. He threw for just 13 touchdowns and 33 interceptions. Leaf tried to make a comeback with the Dallas Cowboys in 2001, but he was released. He signed with Seattle in 2002, but he abruptly retired at age 26 just days before training camp.

Following his short NFL career, Leaf has openly discussed some of the issues that plagued him. The former quarterback has discussed his addiction to prescription pain medication and has had multiple arrests stemming from drug and burglary charges.

In recent years, Leaf has cleaned up his life and has told his story in order to help others who may be experiencing the same addictions.

ESPN hired Leaf in 2019 as a college football analyst.
